How are you today?
Those of you who have been to my classes recently will know that I often refer to the changing nature of weather as a metaphor to describe the changing nature of our thoughts and emotions. Our thoughts and emotions are always in flux so it is wise to allow them to come and go without overly identifying with any of them. Each thought, each emotion you experience is just passing phenomena. When we decide that we only want to feel certain emotions, namely positive ones, then we cannot sustain happiness as to be human means that we will experience a wide variety of emotions – such as joy, sadness, anger, peace, love, resistance….
Do you think its possible to feel sad and still be essentially happy? Is it possible to feel overwhelmed in life but still love life? I used to believe that being happy in life meant that you would only experience joy and feelings of wellbeing. Yet its only through the letting go of this belief that we can discover that happiness is not the absence of fear or difficult emotions. Its the acceptance of them as merely internal weather which comes and goes. That’s not to say that some of these emotions and mind states aren’t very difficult to experience but most of our suffering comes from wanting things to be a different way than how we find them. The next time you experience an emotion you don’t typically like see what happens when you just “allow” the emotion to be there exactly as it is without trying to change it.
Check in with your internal weather right now? Sunny, calm, settled, stormy, rainy, cloudy…….
See if you can notice it without reacting with a judgement of good or bad.
